For the children the world failed to protect.
WHERE ARE THE CHILDREN?
PART I - Lyrics by Andreu Jacob
Where are the children
who used to sleep beneath the stars,
before we taught the sky
the language of alarms?
Where are the small hands
that drew a house, a tree, a sun?
Who taught them how to hide
before they learned to run?
There is a shoe beside the road,
a name nobody calls.
A little coat still hanging
from what is left of walls.
And somewhere in the distance
we explain what must be done,
while a mother holds the silence
where she used to hold her son.
Where are the children?
Where did we send them? ... we send them?
Into the fire,
into the night?
What have we become
when we can watch them disappear
and still go home
and turn off the light? ... the light
Where are the children?
God, where are the children?
where have we gone?
WHERE ARE THE CHILDREN?
PART II (Epilogue) - Lyrics by Anne Lande
Lys glir ned bak horisonten
etterlater seg et skred
uerstattelige tap, så tunge
uerstattelige, unge
barnløs mor og fanget far
tause spørsmål - uten svar
WHERE ARE THE CHILDREN
Was born from a question that I found increasingly difficult to silence.
For a long time, I have watched images of children caught inside conflicts, displacement and destruction children who have no responsibility for the world they have inherited, yet so often become the ones who pay its highest price.
At some point, I no longer wanted to respond to those images only as a spectator. I needed to transform that feeling of helplessness, anger and profound sadness into music.
The title is deliberately a question. Where are the children? But beneath it lies another, perhaps more uncomfortable one: where are we? What happens to us as human beings when the suffering of a child becomes something we can observe, explain, justify, and eventually turn away from?
The first part of the text came from that place. I did not want to write about politics, nations or sides. I wanted to remain with the smallest and most human details: a hand, a shoe, an empty coat, a mother, a name that is no longer being called. The things that remain when every argument has become meaningless.
The work later found another voice through Anne Lande, whose Norwegian text became the second part of the same lyrical work, extending the reflection from another emotional and linguistic space. Where Are the Children? is therefore conceived as one work with two authored sections: Part I written by me, and Part II by Anne Lande. Lyrics Credits
This is not a song that tries to provide an answer.
It is a question I believe we should never become comfortable enough to stop asking.

With deepest gratitude to Maestro Marco Tidu my friend, my brother, and one of the artists who most profoundly inspires me. His work carries a rare sensitivity, courage and vision: deeply rooted in our present, yet somehow reaching toward a time still to come. I am profoundly grateful to him for allowing his painting Memorie to become the visual identity of We Are the Children, giving the work a face of extraordinary humanity, fragility and strength
