A Confederacy of Dunces
Operatic Musical by Andreu Jacob (2026)
Project Description
A Confederacy of Dunces is a twelve-movement musical work with a strong operatic foundation, conceived as a contemporary dramatic cycle rather than a linear narrative. Blending the structural accessibility of musical theatre with the vocal intensity and emotional architecture of opera, the project explores themes of moral fatigue, institutionalized darkness, and the conscious decision to seek renewal.
The first release presents Movements V and VI, which form a central dramatic axis within the larger work. These movements reflect on a world where cruelty has become normalized and silence complicit and on the transformative moment when exhaustion gives way to rupture. In this piece, morning is not innocence, but choice. Light is not passive it is an act.
The full twelve-movement structure is designed for progressive release, building toward a complete staged musical experience with significant operatic weight and strong choral presence.
Dramatis Personae
[THE CROOKED PROPHET]
A fractured herald who proclaims distortion as destiny. From the pulpit of shadow, he shapes fear into doctrine.
[THE WEARINESS]
The slow erosion of endurance. A presence born not of defeat, but of prolonged injustice.
[AWERENESS]
The awakening of conscience. Subtle at first, then irreversible.
[THE BLACK ORATOR]
The voice of sanctioned darkness, persuasive, elegant, and dangerously convincing.
[THE WITNESS]
The bearer of sight. One who sees what is and refuses to sanctify it.
[THE SILENCE]
A powerful absence. Sustains corruption through compliance.
[THE OFFICIAL LINK]
The embodiment of decree. Authority made flesh upon the world.
[THE SEED]
The hidden origin of change. Small, almost invisible, yet inevitable.
[THE UNMASKER]
The force that reveals what power conceals.
[THE RULE]
The system that calls the crooked straight. Structure without morality.
[THE CHILD CHORUS]
Voices of inheritance, innocence observing decay, carrying both memory and future.
[THE SOPRANO OF DAWN]
A radiant vocal presence. Not comfort, but rupture in sound.
[THE SHADOW BEARER]
Marked by history, carrying the weight of accumulated night.
[MORNING (as Decision)]
Not sunrise, but choice. Light as an act of will.

[THE WEARINESS]
There are days when the sky weighs like an ancient guilt,
when shadows do not only inhabit the streets
it wearies.
And that weariness is a seed.
[THE CROOKED PROPHET]
Morning arrives even when the night insists on staying.
There are days when the sky weighs like an ancient guilt,
when shadows do not only inhabit the streets
but also our words, our choices, our silences.
Days when sorrow feels like a decree
and cruelty is signed in official ink upon the skin of the world.
And yet, even then,
when darkness becomes the rule
and what is crooked dares to call itself destiny,
light begins the way all true things begin:
almost in secret.
[THE WEARINESS]
it wearies.
And that weariness is a seed.
A new day
but because the darkness has lasted too long.
has lasted too long.
So let morning come,
Let light be not permission,
